What are content pillars?
Content pillars are the small number of recurring themes a brand publishes against, usually three to five. Every piece belongs to one. They exist to make a brand recognisable for something specific rather than commenting on everything, and they give anyone producing content a decision already made.
Why a small number
An audience learns what an account is about by repetition. Three themes repeated for a year produce a reputation. Fifteen themes produce an account nobody can describe, which is the same as an account nobody follows deliberately.
Pillars are also a filter, and that is most of their day-to-day value. A topic that fits no pillar does not get published, which resolves an argument before it starts and keeps the account from drifting toward whatever happened this week.
Choosing pillars that hold up
- Something you can say repeatedly. A pillar has to survive fifty posts. If it runs out after five, it is a campaign rather than a pillar.
- Something the audience wants. Pillars sit where genuine expertise meets a question people actually have. One without the other produces either boredom or bluffing.
- Something adjacent to the product. Fully off-topic pillars build an audience that will not buy. Fully on-topic pillars read as a brochure. Most good pillars sit next to the product rather than on it.
Pillars as configuration
Written down, pillars are a strategy document that gets read twice. Stored as part of a brand profile, they become a constraint every generated piece inherits, which is the difference between a stated intention and an enforced one.
That constraint is what stops AI content wandering. A generation request with a topic but no pillars can produce anything defensible. The same request against a defined pillar set produces something that belongs on the account.
Content pillars questions
How many content pillars should a brand have?
Three to five. Fewer than three and the account repeats itself; more than five and no theme is published often enough to be remembered. The right number is the largest set you can post against consistently for a year without running dry.
Are content pillars the same as categories or tags?
No. Categories organise content after it exists, for navigation. Pillars decide what gets made before it exists, and they are a strategic constraint. A brand can have twenty tags and still run only four pillars.
How do content pillars improve AI-generated content?
They bound the subject matter. Stored on a brand profile, pillars are applied to every generation, so output stays inside the themes the account is known for instead of producing technically correct content that does not belong on the account.
