What are smart replies?
Smart replies are responses to comments and mentions generated from the specific message being answered, rather than selected from a list of prewritten options. A smart reply reads what was actually said, accounts for the brand's voice and the relationship, and produces a response that fits that one conversation.
How they differ from canned responses
A canned response is a fixed string chosen by a rule. It is fast and it is obvious, which is why an account that answers forty comments with the same three phrases reads as automated within about a minute of scrolling.
A smart reply is generated per message. Two people praising the same post get different replies, because they praised different things. That difference is the entire value: it is the signal that a person read the comment, and it is what makes the reply worth having at all.
What makes a reply sound human
- It answers the specific thing. A reply that could sit under any comment reads as automated. Referring to the actual point made is the strongest signal of attention.
- It is proportionate. A three-word compliment does not deserve a paragraph. Matching the length of what you are answering is most of the naturalness.
- It does not sell. Turning every reply into a product mention is the fastest way to train an audience to stop reading replies.
- It can be brief. Real people often reply with a sentence. Automated replies are recognisable partly because they are uniformly too long.
Where reply automation should stop
Complaints, factual corrections, and anything touching a live customer problem need a person. A generated reply to an angry customer is worse than no reply, because it reads as being processed rather than heard.
The workable pattern is generation with human approval: the system drafts, a person scans and sends. That keeps the volume achievable without handing judgment to a system that does not have any.
Smart replies questions
Are smart replies the same as chatbot responses?
No. A chatbot holds a conversation with one person inside a support surface, usually against a knowledge base. Smart replies produce single public responses to comments and mentions on social platforms, where the audience is everyone reading the thread, not only the commenter.
Will people notice replies are AI-generated?
They notice repetition, disproportionate length, and replies that ignore what was said. A reply that addresses the specific point briefly and in the brand's voice reads as a person paying attention, which is the standard to hold generated replies to.
Can replies be generated through an API?
Yes. Send the original comment and a target platform, and the endpoint returns a reply written against that comment in the workspace's stored brand voice. Most teams route the result into a review queue rather than posting it unattended.
